I read a lot of books. Easily 150 new books a year. This doesn’t count the books I read over and over, because I love them so much. They’re like a security blanket in paper form (or in my case, eBook form).
Lately, I’ve been on a fairytale kick. I love reimagined stories, especially when they are done in a creative way.
The “A Kinda Fairytale” series by Cassandra Gannon does this and well. Starting with Wicked, Ugly, Bad, the series follows different fairytale characters as they fight for their place in the world and their True Loves. There is magic and plot twists and every good thing.
These are definitely not YA books, no matter their colorful covers. There is explicit sex in each book, some more than others. But it definitely isn’t the sole purpose of the stories. The plots and characters are strong and interesting, and I am excited to see what happens next. There is rebellion brewing and the Bad Folk are taking back their own.
Seducing the Sherriff of Nottingham is the 5th book in the series. It’s my favorite so far, though I also particularly enjoyed The Kingpin of Camelot. The storytelling became much stronger over the series and this 5th installment shows it.
Nottingham is corrupt, backwards, and broke, no thanks to Robin Hood and his ‘band’ of domestic terrorists. The Sherriff of Nottingham does his best to hold the place together, which occasionally (often) requires swift and implacable justice. Hence, the gallows everywhere you look.
Then someone kills him and Maid Marion will do anything to find out who and why. Problem is, she’s spent the last 10 years in prison for the crime.
Seducing the Sherriff is an interesting look at racial prejudice, sexism and misogyny, with a dash of magic and enough silliness to make it a fast, fun read. The characters explore trust and vulnerability, as well as the bravery to reach for what you really want in life.
Would recommend for fantasy readers looking for something both light-hearted and nuanced.
