Imagine you have been hiking in the sun all day. Its humid, hot, dusty. You can feel the tingling on your neck and shoulders that heralds a sunburn. There’s a rock in your boot. A mosquito has followed you for hours, zinging back and forth by your ear.
You trudge the final half mile back to your camp. You kick off you boots, strip out of your nasty clothes, and plunge yourself in a cold river.
This euphoria comes close to the satisfaction of reading Megan Whalen Turner’s final installment in the Queen’s Thief series.
Her story-telling is amazing, her details sharp and visceral, and her humor top-notch. Every book in the series has twisty bits that are surprising, yet so obviously the only solution after the rich plot-building she sets up.
Each book is told from a different POV and her characters are wonderful. Flawed, human, brave, magical. The relationships she shows and the choices her characters face are weighty and have far reaching consequences. Think geopolitical intrigue, a touch of magic, complex love stories, and friendships born of war and service. Add in strong female leaders and I’m in heaven.

I cannot recommend this series enough. It is listed in the YA category, but the conflicts dealt with are vast enough to be fully in the ‘adult’ fantasy genre. 10/10, please go buy them now and devour them.
