Still luxuriating in the fantasy genre. Kate Stradling is one of my go-to authors. She always has interesting and clever takes on classic stories.
Brine and Bone is a retelling of The Little Mermaid tale by H.C. Anderson. But, in usual Stradling fashion, things are a bit different. Instead of the mermaid being the heroine, Magdelena, daughter of a duke, is the one who finds the prince washed ashore. She and the prince know each other from the royal court, a place she had fled when her empathic abilities made it unbearable.
Now, she must protect herself and him from an uncanny young woman, silent and possessive, before they both are harmed.
Short, intense, and an excellent disruption of tropes!
