Title: Emily Wilde’s Encyclopedia of Faeries
Genre: Fantasy
Pages: 320
Rating: 4.5/5
I love me a good fairy tale. Fantasy was my go-to as a teenager and I still love it, as evidenced by my multiple fantasy WIPs. Fawcett’s take on the Fae/Canny trope is delightful.
Her titular heroine, Emily Wilde, is a no-nonsense scholar on the hunt for research for her in-progress encyclopedia. The existence of the fae world and magic is generally known, but not well understood. Wilde is something of an anthropologist, willing to risk her safety and comfort to learn new information.
She sets out on a season of field work to document the unknown fae of Ljosland, some far Nordic place of long winters and stark landscapes. As she gets to know (and unintentionally offend) the locals, she learns of the dangerous lives they lead at the mercy of a tyrannical fae king.
Some action, a little bit of romance, a gruff heroine who is more comfortable in the wilderness than around people. Delicious.
I paid for the eBook, something I rarely do, usually content to wait for things to pop up at the library. Excited for the sequel!
