Guys.
This is my favorite book of all time. It’s been my favorite for years and years.
Part of Heinlein’s YA work, it is an intergalactic space opera, complete with mortal danger, daring escapes, and alien overlords.
After winning a spacesuit in a national sweepstakes, Kip accidentally gets abducted by aliens and taken to their hidden base on the moon. He learns this is their forward base for invading earth and exploiting the plentiful food source available: us.
Imprisoned with him is a young girl named Peewee and the Mother Thing, an alien whose job it is to patrol our solar system and keep us out of trouble. Together they have to find a way to escape and alert the Mother Thing’s people of the impending invasion.
I love this book. It’s funny and thoughtful and the science, both real and imagined, is interesting. I am certain Andy Weir read this book; his stories have some of the same structure and style.
If you are into classic Sci-Fi, I highly recommend this book, as well as Heinlein’s The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress and Starship Troopers (it is nothing like the movie, please please don’t watch that stupid movie).
Robert Heinlein (1907-1988) wrote a ton of stuff. His Wikipedia article is interesting; go take a look!
