I wanted to read something with a classic fantasy feel, in the vein of The Last Unicorn. I’d never read anything by Sharon Shinn, so picked this up on Kindle.
I liked this story. It had all the bits of a YA fantasy that I would have loved in my teens. There was a bit of a mystery, a bit of suspense. I liked that Coriel, the main character, was true to her own convictions throughout the book, even when she had shifting loyalties and knowledge.
I don’t know if I liked it enough to read all her catalog. There are some other stand alone books that sound interesting, but Shinn’s series don’t sound interesting right now. But if you're looking for a foundational fantasy voice, along the lines of Merecedes Lackey and Peter Beagle, this will fit right in.
