Title: The Dark Lord of Derkholm
Genre: Fantasy
Pages: 532
Rating: 5/5
Diana Wynn Jones is one of my favorites. I love her witty, slightly irreverent fantasy worlds. Her ideas are fresh and complex without feeling staid or forced. I always reach for one of her books when I’m feeling burnt out and need a fun, indulgent read.
The Dark Lord of Derkholm exists inside her Chrestomani universe. This world is full of magic and mythical creatures who are forced to host ‘Pilgram Parties,’ or people from other worlds who want to experience in a real-life fantasy adventure. You can vanquish wizards and fight dragons… all for a price, of course.
Trapped by Mr Chesney into sacrificing their homes and livelihoods to this scheme, Derk and his family become players in a greater resitance to overthrow Chesney, free their people, and protect their magic.
Highly recommend!
