Flavia de Luce is a brat. She’s onery, dismissive of her sisters, and wants only to read scientific books in her laboratory. Then she finds a dead body. Delighted — er, she means, appalled — she sets out trying to find the killer.
While Flavia is an adolescent, the book is not for middle grade. It took my two tries to get into it, but once I got some momentum, I raced through to the end. I’ve read three or four of the series and Bradley keeps things fresh with vivid details and grim motives.
