I really wanted to love this book. The idea is super interesting, blending near future and fantasy. But I just could not.
Gretchen lives in some future after some world ending diaster (? maybe? it never says) and with humans removed, the farie realm has returned. Gretchen goes into this world to rescue her sister at the command of her mother who is some sort of powerful political figure (? I guess? there are deadly consequences hinted at, but I’m never sure where this woman’s power comes from or why she’s like that).
Gretchen meets Arther, one of the Bear-Folk, and the become embroiled in a war that could affect the human settlements (? maybe? I admit I was losing the plot and interest at this point.)
Gretchen does confront her mother at the end, but it’s a sort of Cinderella moment, except with shape-shifting, and I don’t know.
There was just so much potential here that never went anywhere. I see it has lots of positive reviews, but I just could not get into it.
