Juen stood between Ninan and Captain Kyln and wonder why she ever agreed to let Ero into her country. The boy — the young man — was causing her no end of trouble.
“Why was I not consulted?” Kyln said in his bellowing way. Too many years shouting at soldiers to speak moderately now.
Ninan was unruffled by the man’s belligerence. “The Prince is allowed his own guard detail, by common courtesy, if nothing else.”
“There is no ‘courtesy’ to be considered! They are convicted felons! Of an enemy nation!”
“They have sworn loyalty to their Champion.”
“Their word is useless!”
“Their word has been taken by Athus’li. She will punish them if they break their oath to Her Champion.”
Kyln made his opinion of the Goddess and Her Chosen known. Ninan bristled for the first time.
“He is the Hero. Do not disrespect him.”
